چکیده

In an earlier peper [ I ] on the experimental evd~~iit ioll of cyhernetic models for 1)acterial growth on multiple substrates, we presented certain hasic postulates 1)ased on all existing experimental literatnre known to us that all models for bacterial growth in a multisuhstrate environment must satisfy. At the suggestion of one of the reviewers of that paper, we are presenting an analysis of the experimental literature that led 11s to the elucidation of the postulates mentioned above. It is our belief that this analysis will provide a greater understanding of the optimal nature of cellular regulatory processes controlling the bacterial growth on mriltiple substrates. Bacterial growth is a highly regulated process involving thousands of biochemical reactions. Some of these regulatory actions become strikingly tipparent during the growth of bacteria on media containing more than one functionally equivalent ( i e , serving the same physiological function, such a s carbon source, energy source, nitrogen source, etc.) su1)strates. The regulation of mnltiple substrate utilizsition was detected as early as the turn of this century, when Dienert [ Z ] found that glucose had an inhibitory effect on the galactose fermentation hy yeast. Similar interactions between carbohydrates were reported by some other early investigators [31, [ 4 ] . A systematic and extensive study of bacterial growth on inultiple substrates was conducted by Monod [S], who discovered the phenomenon of “diauxie” and established its close relationship to enzymatic adaptation. Since that time, numerous researchers have observed the sequential utilizations of multiple substrates by a variety of inicroorganisms. A close scrutiny of many of these reports shows several basic characteristics apparent in all the observations of bacterial growth on multiple substrates and we listed below.

An ANP and MULTIMOORA-Based SWOT Analysis for Strategy Formulation

Since no organization can have unlimited resources, strategists should decide on a strategy that can provide the greatest benefits to the organization. Decisions on strategy formulation commit the organization to produce specific products, work in specific markets, and exploit certain resources and technologies for a relatively long time. Strategies dictate the long-term competitive advantages ...

Optimal marketing strategy: A decision-making with ANP and TOPSIS

The purpose of the current study is to model the marketing strategy decision-making problem as a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem and provide a five-step decision support framework to make and carefully assess the marketing strategies. A marketing strategy decision-making framework is essential for marketing strategists to determine the most appropriate marketing strategy in an eff...

A cybernetic view of microbial growth: modeling of cells as optimal strategists.

A cybernetic framework is presented which views microbial response in multiple substrate environments as a judicious investment of cellular resources in synthesizing different key proteins according to an optimal regulatory strategy. A mathematical model is developed within the cybernetic framework for the diauxic growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae on a mixture of D-glucose and D-xylose. The "bang...

Divergence and redundancy of transport and metabolic rate-yield strategies in a single Escherichia coli population.

The energetic efficiency of nutrient uptake and conversion into biomass is a key factor in the ecological behavior of microorganisms. The constraints shaping the metabolic rate-yield trade-off in bacteria are not well understood. To examine whether metabolic rate-yield settings and physiological strategies evolve toward a particular optimum in a constant environment, we studied multiple Escheri...

Functional Classification and Composition of Phytoplankton in Liman Lake

Functional classification and composition of phytoplankton of Liman Lake were studied between January 2002 and December 2003. A total of 109 taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Dinophyta, Xantophyta, Chrysophyta and Cryptophyta were identified. The succession during 2002 began with R-Strategists (with a high surface to volume ratio, including blue-green algae with filame...
